Synthetic monitoring helps you:

  • Catch performance regressions before they hit real users (as part of CI/CD).
  • Monitor performance from specific geographical locations or device types that your RUM data might not adequately cover.
  • Get consistent, reproducible performance benchmarks.

However, misconfigurations or overly aggressive data collection can certainly add overhead. I always recommend profiling your application after integrating any new monitoring tool. Test it in a production-like environment. Most tools let you configure sampling rates. You can collect data from a percentage of users to balance performance with data richness. It's a trade-off you manage, not an inherent performance killer.
How does Frontend Observability differ from traditional Backend Observability? While both aim for system health, Frontend Observability focuses on the user's experience. Backend observability typically monitors server health, database queries, API response times, and microservice interactions. Frontend Observability looks at what happens *after* the server responds: browser rendering, client-side JavaScript execution, network latency from the user's perspective, UI responsiveness, and user interaction flows. For example, a slow API call is a backend issue, but a slow-rendering UI after the API responds is a frontend issue. They complement each other, giving you a full picture of your application's health from end-to-end. My 8 years of experience, including AWS Certified Solutions Architect expertise, taught me that a holistic view across both is essential for truly resilient systems.
